She immediately wanted to turn the story into a film and soon sent the story to screenwriters. ![]() Producer Ellie Wood had then finished John Preston’s historical novel, The Dig, a semi-fictional work (which, at the time, had yet to be released) expanding on the real 1939 archeological excavation at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, England. Shortly afterwards, Charles Phillips of Cambridge University was taken to the site by Mr Maynard and was astonished by what he saw.Simon Stone’s The Dig, now on Netflix, starring Carrey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes, began its source material excavation in 2006. She oversaw the excavation herself for two years before what appeared to be a huge ship burial was unearthed. Mrs Pretty consulted the curator of the Ipswich Corporation Museum, Guy Maynard, and appointed local amateur archaeologist Basil Brown, played by Ralph Fiennes, to start excavating the site, alongside Mrs Pretty’s gardener, gamekeeper and another estate worker. The site was comprised of eighteen low earth mounds located 500 yards from the house in the grounds of Sutton Hoo estate.
